This area is dubbed "West of Trail" because it is located on the west side of Tamiami Trail (US 41) and extends south from downtown Sarasota to Siesta Keys southern bridge. While a great portion of the county is technically on the west side of the Trail, this area in particular is noted for its unique character. The original settlement of Sarasota began in this area and the streets and homes reflect the unique nature of our early residents. The streets are winding and tree lined. The homes reflect both "northern characteristics" and others a Spanish/Mediterranean influence. One small, hidden street is reminiscent of a mini Lombard Street in San Francisco. Properties that line the bay have become targets for rebuilding and are now occupied by new, large residences.
